What is body image?

Our perception of our body's appearance which is often influenced by a variety of factors including external and internalized messages.

How can I tell if I have body image issues?

Consider your internalized self-talk and how it might sound if it was said aloud. How would your internal dialogue sound if you said the same things to a friend? People with body image issues often report thoughts such as

  • "I look fat."
  • "I look awful in this."
  • "My spouse is embarassed to be seen with me."
  • "I need to go on a diet."
  • "The only way I'll ever feel better about myself is to get plastic surgery."

What's the point of body acceptance in an appearance-obsessed society?

Believe it or not, your body is not the problem.  Whether you might be dealing with body dysmorphic disorder or just struggling to maintain positive or neutral body image while those around you focus on appearances, we can work together to heal your relationship with your body.  Image exposure, mirror therapy, and challenging negative thoughts about your body can be part of this journey to self-acceptance.
