Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical behavior therapy, or DBT is closely related to cognitive behavioral therapy. DBT combines the examination of cognitive distortions and problematic behaviors with specific, practical skills for managing difficult situations such as interpersonal interaction and emotion management.

A major part of this therapy is focus on the present moment, known as mindfulness skills. For a sample of a few mindfulness exercises specific to food and eating, check the resources page on this site.

Another helpful piece of this work is tracking feelings, noting surrounding events around emotions. In pursuing this therapy, clients often report feeling a sense of structure and increased ability to notice problematic patterns in their lives, as well as the skills to deal with these challenges.
