Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, often called CBT for short, is based on the idea that we each struggle with difficult and defeating thoughts called cognitive distortions. These distortions are often so practiced and common in our lives that we don’t notice them – these are referred to as automatic thoughts. The idea is that each emotion and behavior originates in a problematic thought. While it is nearly impossible to change our feelings, and very difficult to change our behaviors, CBT operates on the theory that it is our thoughts and outlook that we can change, and when we do so, our feelings and behaviors follow suit.

A specific branch relating to CBT is positive psychology. Connected with the idea that difficult thoughts can cause painful emotions and destructive behaviors, positive psychology also focuses on how we view the world -- our explanatory style. Pessimism (the belief that bad things do and will happen to us) can shape our perspective and sense of hopelessness considerably. Fortunately, this is not unchangeable. Using CBT techniques, it is possible to shift your point of view to a more hopeful and comfortable one.
